Now, don't get all too excited... We're just upgrading... to ODDBLOG 2.0!

But, in fact, there's not a lot new or different going on; in fact we've tried to keep it all pretty much the same. So, us calling it the Oddblog 2.0 is sort of like saying we got a new car when really all we did is park it in a different garage.

So, that said, here's the new address of the blog:

All Souls' Day

The Shrine (where Orin is music and liturgy director) celebrates All Souls' Day:

A display of 20,000 roses in the church - each placed there by a member of the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate to remember a deceased loved one

Following the last mass of the morning, a procession to the Resurrection Garden where the names of those 20,000 were placed in a prayer capsule for the upcoming year.

Madeleine is 4!! (and...ur...um...16 days)

So, if you hang out with us regularly, you probably know that my daughter, Madeleine, celebrated her fourth birthday on October 16th. There was nothing, however, posted on the blog about it, and for that I'm really sorry. My wife pointed out the ommission to me yesterday. For all the pointless stuff we put up on this blog, I shouln't have missed this.

My little girl is awesome, outgoing (maybe more than me), smart, funny, creative, and full of life. I truly can't imagine life without her (nor the rest of my family for that matter). She makes my life so much brighter.

Here, for your enjoyment, is a recent conversation she had with a parent and fellow classmate from pre-school:

Adult (to the other kid): What does your dad do for a living?

Other Kid: My dad drives a truck

Adult (to Madeleine): And what does your dad do for a living?

Madeleine (almost with a shrug): Oh, my dad works with Jesus.

All Hallows' Eve

The term Halloween is shortened from All Hallows' Even (both "even" and "eve" are abbreviations of "evening," but "Halloween" gets its "n" from "even") as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day," which is now also known as All Saints' Day. It was a day of religious festivities in various northern European Pagan traditions, until Popes Gregory III and Gregory IV moved the old Christian feast of All Saints' Day from May 13 (which had itself been the date of a pagan holiday, the Feast of the Lemures) to November 1. In the ninth century, the Church measured the day as starting at sunset, in accordance with the Florentine calendar. Although All Saints' Day is now considered to occur one day after Halloween, the two holidays were, at that time, celebrated on the same day. Liturgically, the Church traditionally celebrated that day as the Vigil of All Saints, and, until 1970, a day of fasting as well. Like other vigils, it was celebrated on the previous day if it fell on a Sunday, although secular celebrations of the holiday remained on the 31st. The Vigil was suppressed in 1955, but was later restored in the post-Vatican II calendar.

Shannon, when not Oddwalking, is also a parish youth minister. One of his successful programs with the teens there is "Prayer, Praise, and _______" -- this is a program where they all gather for (you guessed it) prayer, singing praise, and some food item, a different one each time.

Fredbird!

Fredbird dropped by the Sts. Joachim and Anne Care Services Fundraiser, this past Saturday, October 27, 2008. Oddwalk played at the event for a little over an hour, and in the middle of the set, Fredbird showed up to entertain the crowd and sign autographs. In the video below, we introduce him and sing the old favorite "The Cubs Song."

Shannon Cerneka and Orin Johnson are the duo that bring to life "Oddwalk Ministries", who are represented by GIA Publications, Inc. Their purpose is "to help young and old alike embrace life as Eucharistic people through fun, upbeat and interactive music and witnessing." Rooted in the Midwest in Illinois and Missouri, you will find them leading retreats and workshops as well as entertaining at concerts and coffee houses.

On Walk Away Different, their 4th CD together, they bring to light a more intimate depth of their relationship with God. In previous projects they have leaned more to the songs that would appeal to a younger audience with fun and frivolity. On Walk Away Different I get a sense of their reaching out to a broader audience with messages that could speak to young and old. There is a great variety here with songs of hope, pleading and challenge among the 16 tracks of this record. You will find upbeat pieces that will have you tapping your toes and then in another moment, contemplating your walk of faith with a soft, meditative song that will touch your heart.

The various adaptations of popular psalms are always welcome and are represented well on this CD. As a liturgical music minister, I can appreciate having options when it comes to the sung psalms and find their renditions of six well known psalms to be very congregational friendly. I will surely use them in my own parish setting. I found the vocals to be very good and the addition of Sarah Bauer on many of the tracks is wonderful. Her sweet yet strong vocals add depth to these selections. Being a fan of harmony, I was very pleased to hear very nice harmonies throughout Walk Away Different.

As I listened to the CD I heard overtones of other very successful liturgical writers such as the St. Louis Jesuits, David Haas and Marty Haugen.

My favorites vary as much as the selection of songs on this CD. I found myself straying away a time or two from my listening through the first several tracks until I came to "Get It Together." Once I heard that song, I could feel the passion and energy that would be typical of a live performance with this duo. Unlike the first 6 songs that were nice enough, but also forgetful, "Get It Together" stood out and got my attention. Likewise was the song "I Give My Spirit" which I found to be a haunting and extremely powerful rendition of Psalm 31. The deliberate tempo and strong vocals really drew me into this song, not to mention the theme that we all encounter so often . . . our brokenness and our pleas to God for help. Of note as well, is a great Eucharistic song, entitled "Share" which would work well in any congregation for a Communion song.

Overall, I found Walk Away Different to be full of great themes of our faith, admitting our weakness, understanding God as our Savior in the Trinity, challenging us to move to the Light, move where God wants us to be. I think there is something here for everybody with direct and to the point messages. I feel that this CD will make great strides in becoming a staple in any liturgical music minister's music library. The songs are simple and would be easily worked into your choir's music repertoire. You can purchase Walk Away Different through GIA Music at www.giamusic.com/products/P-725.cfm.

Prayer Request

Please keep a friend of Orin's in prayer, Frank Quinn, OP. Frank until recently was a prof at Aquinas Institute, and while Orin never had him formally in class, many of my friends did, and he helped a great deal on a couple projects of mine. He was for many years a leading liturgical voice in America and the English-speaking world.

He is reportedly near death, please keep him and all who know and love him in prayer. Thanks.

Erin and I wanted to let you all know that we're expecting our third child around June 1st. We feel very blessed to have yet another addition to our family and ask all of you for your prayers during the pregnancy and beyond.

In case you're wondering how another Cerneka child will contribute to the greater good, consider that our other two children were born during years that the Cardinals went to the World Series. ('04, '06)

I have to say, I'm feeling pretty good about 2009!

NCCYM 2008 Promo Video

The NFCYM has also just posted a promotional video for the NCCYM (adult conference) this December in Cleveland. Both members of Oddwalk (along with many of our friends of course) make brief appearances. View the whole video at this page.

The music underscoring most of the video is a live performance at the last NCCYM by Matt Maher of "Your Grace is Enough." In the middle of verse 1, just after "... keep us apart" we get an extreme closeup of Shannon's already slightly-larger-than-normal head.

Ironically, at "... all God's people sing along" one is able to view a brief action clip of a wigged-out Orin "Jammin' with Jesus."

Because we know you just can't live without having either Oddwalk's home page or this blog open at any given instant of the day, and because you don't want to use a tab of your browser to do that, and because you're on a Mac, and because we recently discovered a pretty cool Mac app called Fluid, we've created these two applications for Macs, which when run, open the given page in a stand-alone app.

Maybe it's worth it just to get the nifty Mac OS Oddwalk icon.

Shannon's dad wrote a tribute to a favorite restaurant of his, a Bob Evans in the West County suburbs of St. Louis. We haven't done this in a while (here are rounds I, II, III , and IV)!

The question: What do this video and the Chicago Cubs have in common?

While the Cubs did indeed have the best record in the National League this year, we're all accustomed to their dramatic failings, breaking the hearts of Cubs fans around the world. We predict this year will be no exception, even if it takes all seven games of the World Series.

This video of Shannon singing "The Cubs Song" (and Orin singing "Old Irish Blessing") has been our most viewed video on YouTube for quite some time (3,890 views as of this posting), about a year-and-a-half. That run should come to an end sometime later today as our cover of "Jesus is My Friend" continues its startling pace of one view every six minues - and it's only been up for two weeks!

Shana Tovah

Shana Tovah is Hebrew for "A good and sweet year" and is the usual greeting for Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, which is celebrated by Jews tonight and Tuesday morning this year.

As I (Orin) was headed to Temple Shaare Emeth in suburban St. Louis to play at their early service tonight, I passed the small gift shop there and saw the above in the window - a plush play set of bread, wine, and a candle. Blessings over these items are customary at prayer and meal times in Jewish traditions - and likely where some of our earliest Christian traditions come from, of course.

It was nice to see we still share some things in common.

The Jewish new year commemorates God's creating the heavens and the earth. The Rabbi who delivered the sermon tonight told a version of this story as part of her reflections:

Once upon a time, as God created the world, He decided to make beings in His image. As he generated his own reflection in man and woman, the angels got word of the project, and were consumed with jealousy.

"How unfair!" they cried. "Those humans will have it all. They get to experience life on earth with all the perks: laughter, tears, ice cream, wasabi, softness, scratchiness. And as if that 'being alive' stuff weren't blessing enough, they get immortality as well!" (If God is eternal, so, too, would be anything made in God's image.)

The angels were furious; no being should merit both ice cream and infinity. If heavenly beings were denied earthly experiences, why allow humans celestial ones?

So, they plotted against the humans. They decided to hide God's image from them, and assembled to determine how it could be done. One angel suggested, "Let's hide it far up in the mountains; I hear humans don't like to shvitz much. They'll never climb that high."

Another disagreed: "That won't work. Those granola hippies God put on the West Coast will surely hike to the top of the mountains and discover it. Better we hide God's image far out in the sea. Most folks won't go farther than a cruise ship will take them."

Again, others dissented. They realized that any God-like being would eventually access the heights of heaven and the depths of the ocean.

Finally, a wise old angel made a brilliant suggestion: "Let us hide God's image between and within the humans. That will be the last place on earth they would think to look for it."

God let them. And so it was.

MSNBC - Oh, milk chocolate. Wherefore art thou?

Apparently not in some Hershey’s products that contained milk chocolate for years, and that has passionate chocolate aficionados fighting mad.

Products such as Whatchamacallit, Milk Duds, Mr. Goodbar and Krackel no longer have milk chocolate coatings, and Hershey’s Kissables are now labeled “chocolate candy” instead of “milk chocolate.”

What’s going on here? On Friday, TODAY consumer correspondent Janice Lieberman reported that Hershey’s has switched to less expensive ingredients in several of its products. In particular, cocoa butter — the ingredient famous for giving chocolate its creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture — has been replaced with vegetable oil.

The removal of cocoa butter violates the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s definition of milk chocolate, so subtle changes have appeared on the labels of the Hershey’s products with altered recipes. Products once labeled “milk chocolate” now say “chocolate candy,” “made with chocolate” or “chocolatey.”

This news article (NY Times) reports:

"Scientists have for the first time recorded individual brain cells in the act of summoning a spontaneous memory, revealing not only where a remembered experience is registered but also, in part, how the brain is able to recreate it.

"The recordings, taken from the brains of epilepsy patients being prepared for surgery, demonstrate that these spontaneous memories reside in some of the same neurons that fired most furiously when the recalled event had been experienced. Researchers had long theorized as much but until now had only indirect evidence.

"Experts said the study had all but closed the case: For the brain, remembering is a lot like doing (at least in the short term, as the research says nothing about more distant memories)."

So what? Well, what we do at mass, especially around the eucharistic prayer time is remember - specifically Christ's paschal mystery - his suffering, death, resurrection and ascension, and we remember these things in such a way that it makes those historic events present to us (or us to them). The fancy-shmancy word for this is anamnesis.

And now we have some scientific corroboration for just this - that the way our brain remembers things is similar to the doing of those things in the first place.

Pretty darn cool.

But why this image of Homer with this post? Part of the experiments involved showing folks TV images, including Seinfeld and Simpsons clips. And as a PS - you get some pretty weird results if you do a google image search for 'anamnesis' - it's true.

A great online physics game, Fantastic Contraption.

As one review says, "As with all puzzle games, this one starts off easy so you can get the feel of the the environment, but as the levels progress you'll find it increasingly difficult to get pink thingy A to Pink area B. But then, that's what makes Fantastic Contraption such a blast to play. You solve one puzzle and you feel psyched enough to try another, then another. Before you know it, it's 2:30 in the morning and your significant other is packing the kids in the car and promising divorce."

CNN - Don LaFontaine, the voiceover king whose "In a world ..." phrase on movie trailers was much copied -- and much parodied -- has died, according to media reports. He was 68.

Don LaFontaine was featured as "that voiceover guy" [see below] on a recent Geico commercial.

LaFontaine, who was born in Duluth, Minnesota, began as a voice actor in the mid-1960s while working as a recording engineer, according to his Web site. His strong, slightly gravelly voice was featured on trailers for thousands of films, including "The Godfather," "Fatal Attraction" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." For a time in the late '70s, LaFontaine was the official voice of Paramount Pictures.

ROME - An Italian priest and theologian said Sunday he is organizing an online beauty pageant for nuns to give them more visibility within the Catholic Church and to fight the stereotype that they are all old and dour.

The "Miss Sister 2008" contest will start in September on a blog run by the Rev. Antonio Rungi and will give nuns from around the world a chance to showcase their work and their image.

"Nuns are a bit excluded, they are a bit marginalized in ecclesiastical life," Rungi told The Associated Press after Italian media carried reports of the idea. "This will be an occasion to make their contribution more visible."

So, Oddwalk has this youth minister friend in Sydney, Australia we've never met - Paul Skippen is his name. He bought our CD "Walk Away Different" when he saw it online at GIA's site (not having heard of us nor a note of our music before then). He's been using some of the music, and recently (like, yesterday) used "My Name is I AM" at mass. He prepared a PowerPoint slideshow to go with it - not just the lyrics, but some evocative, prayerful images. He emailed that to us, and we promptly turned it into a YouTube video. You can watch it below, but it might also be worth clicking through to the main YouTube site and watching it in "High Quality" - there'll be a link right below the video over there. The drunk driving the drunk

A blind journalist was given a month's suspended jail sentence and fined 500 euros (750 dollars) by a French court Friday for driving while drunk and without a license.

The owner of the car, who was also drunk as he sat next to the blind man when he drove the vehicle, was given the same sentence and had his license suspended for five months by the court in the northeastern town of Nancy.

Orin's wife is the Catholic campus minister at McKendree University in Lebanon, IL. She works in the Methodist campus ministry office (MU is a Methodist School) with Tim Harrison. Here's a youtube video they put together highlighting how the office serves the student community.

They use a "WePhone" (I assume it's not a WiiPhone) as their image, with various buttons which guide the video and their ministries. I wonder if I can get those buttons on my iPhone too?

Emphasis

For those of you coming here to find a strange joke or a curious bit of news, I (Orin) apologize, but I couldn't think of where else to share these liturgical thoughts and questions.

You may know the Vatican recently gave its approval to a revised English translation of the mass, though we likely won't be using it for at least two or three years. Find more info on the new translation - and the translation itself - at the USCCB website. Find more info on the struggles (theological, political and otherwise) to get it completed here.

Anyway, I was thinking about one of the more obvious changes this morning - responding to the presider's "The Lord be with you," we are used to saying "And also with you." This will be changed to a more literal translation from the Latin, and will be "And with your spirit."

There are, more or less, two methods of translations: a literal approach, where one tries to get a word-for-word equivalency, and even word order, punctuation, and capitalization can be important. A more dynamic approach tries to preserve meaning while making the language more accessible and understandable. The first english translations (in the 1970's) took a more dynamic approach, where lately the mandate has been that translations be as literal as possible.

Here (finally) is the point I was pondering this morning - translation methods aside for the moment, translation words on a page from Latin to other words on a page in English can't really account too well for spoken emphasis. Music has all sorts of symbols, dots, and other markings to help establish emphasis - languages have punctuation, but it only helps a bit.

For instance - "And with your spirit." In this case, which word is emphasized changes drastically the meaning of what is said, and in fact changes what the presider meant by "The Lord be with you."

If the congregation were to emphasize AND - this seems to say that we the congregation are reminding the presider that that the Lord is with him too, as if he had forgotten.

If WITH is emphasized, well, I'm not entirely sure what that might mean, compared to other prepositions, like "by, near, in," etc.). Let's move on.

If YOUR is emphasized, a stronger emphasis is placed on reminding - or even commissioning - the Lord to be with the presider's spirit. Or it may sound as if we're alerting the presider that he misspoke - you said "The Lord be with you" when you meant something a little different, including our spirit out here.

If SPIRIT is emphasized, that seems to imply the Lord has been with the presider in some other way, and now we, the congregation wish the Lord to be with his spirit. It also implies that the presider's wish specifically neglected our spirit, and wished the Lord to be with us in some other way.

And, in any case, does the response imply we the congregation (or as individuals) don't have this "spirit" at all, or don't need the Lord to be with it, or what exactly? Is there any way to determine from the original Latin - by word order, or anything - if any stress was implied in the original?

Was the original English translation "And also with you" trying to avoid these problems, or was it just as faulty?

Granted, I'm a little prone to over-analysis of such things, but this seems important, especially considering that period of teaching and catechesis we're all supposed to embark on before jumping in with the new phrases. Musically too - for instance, musical stresses should line up with spoken stresses - but what if we can't tell where they fall?

I tried to keep this brief, I hope you all caught my gist here. What about emphasis? What say you?

Happy Feast of Our Lady of the Snows

Hello all - we write to all of you on this August 5th, 2008, the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows, known today as the Dedication of the Mary Major Basilica in Rome.

The early Church was often struggling in its theology, and one of the first debates was on the very nature of Jesus: was he a man, was he God, or was he somehow both earthly and spiritual? Jesus, uniquely, is fully God (part of the Holy Trinity) but yet Son of both God and of Adam and Eve, through Mary – fully human.And so, today, we celebrate Mary as Mother of God. The Mary Major Basilica was built to honor this very fact, and was the first church built in honor of and thusly named for Our Lady. We thank Mary for being the first "sacred vessel" to contain the body and blood of Christ, and for her giving spirit in presenting him to us. We see this too in the representation of Our Lady of the Snows, presenting to us both Christ and his message of Healing and Hope.

May we all take a moment today, those whose lives are connected through employment, vows, or some other way to Our Lady of the Snows (her Shrine is where Orin is music and liturgy coordinator) or any other title of Mary, and in that moment, rejoice and be thankful for all that is good in our lives.

This coming Monday, as part of the ongoing Healing and Hope Novena at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, IL, Oddwalk will lead the music for Mass, beginning at 7:30pm.

The Mass, being held in the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, will feature Fr. Jeff Vomund as the main celebrant and homilist. Some of you may know Fr. Vomund as the producer and host of Faith Matters, a bi-monthly television program for KMOV in St. Louis as well as regular guest on the Dave Glover Show in the “Priest and the Rabbi” segment for 97.1 FM Talk, also in St. Louis.

Following Mass, there will be a candlelight rosary procession.

Orin coordinates the liturgies for this annual event at the Shrine, the Healing and Hope Novena. Each night we celebrate mass at 7:30 with a specially-picked presider and homilist, good music ministry, meaningful ritual, and communal prayer. Each night has a different focus, i.e. Finding Healing and Hope within... Physical Infirmities, The Loss of a Loved One, Spiritual Difficulties, etc. The 9 nights of prayer lead up to August 5th, which is the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows.

Oddwalk and friends are providing music ministry the night of August 4, Finding Healing and Hope within Social Injustices. Please join Orin and many others in prayer at the Shrine July 28 to August 5, 7:30 each night, come for any or all.

Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who was
better on his computer. They had been going at it for days, and God [the Father] was tired of hearing all of the bickering. Finally God said, "Cool it. I am going to set up a test that will run two hours and I will judge who does the better job."

So down Satan and Jesus sat at the keyboards and typed away. They moused. They did spreadsheets. They wrote reports. They sent faxes. They sent e-mail. They sent out e-mail with attachments. They downloaded. They did some genealogy reports. They made cards. They did every known job.

But ten minutes before their time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, the rain poured and, of course, the electricity went off. Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in the underworld. Jesus just sighed.

The electricity finally flickered back on, and each of them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically, screaming "It's gone! It's all gone! I lost everything when the power went out!"

Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all of his files from the past two hours. Satan observed this and became irate. "Wait! He cheated, how did he do it?"

God shrugged and said, "Jesus saves."
